settling into my lil room in japan | apt hunting, frustrating language barrier experience
february 7, 2025 · episode 3 of 38
what actually happened
second round of luggage to the share house, then shibuya for the first time. four days in japan and we still hadn't eaten sushi, which is wild. rearranged my tiny room so i could actually walk in it, then daiso and nitori for supplies i wasn't sure i even needed yet because i didn't have an apartment.
applied for the apartment. wong said there was a high chance i'd get it because it had been on the market a long time. i didn't want to unpack everything in case i was moving soon.
then the bank. big epic fail. they said i couldn't open an account until i'd been here six months, so i'd have to wait for my company to do it for me.
and then the moment i actually got frustrated. i spent 30 minutes standing outside a door trying to fill out a form on my phone, and i couldn't google translate it because i was using my phone for the form, so i kept screenshotting and going back and forth. every time i submitted it said i'd missed something. first time going out by myself and i almost started crying. i sat in a cafe for two hours and got it done anyway. i'm not giving up.
what i really need to be doing is learning more japanese. i thought i knew a lot. i know nothing.
day six: an english speaking agent showed us two more. a remodeled 2k with a tatami room and a yellow wall i didn't hate, 16 minutes from the station, and a fully furnished one room right by the station as a backup. still attached to the first apartment. i'm just ready for some stability. i keep moving and grooving and i want a place to chill.
