apt keys & kimonos?! | how i spent my birthday in japan

march 1, 2025 · episode 6 of 38

what actually happened

23 in tokyo. 7:30am and i'm in the best mood. getting my keys, renting a kimono, and my boyfriend found a flower shop in japan and sent me flowers with a delivery time i could pick.

picking up keys in japan is a whole thing. they go over the entire contract with you, it took over an hour, and they gave me a binder of every important document plus a little gift for working with them. signing it made me feel like an adult in a way i never had. i'm fully providing for myself here, on a japanese salary, in my own apartment. that's strange and new.

then asakusa with anna. kimono rental was around 6,500 yen, they wrap you up tight, the hair, the whole thing. we winged it, didn't check the weather or what came with the package, and somehow found a place where the service was impeccable. someone was cosplaying goku next to us. we are not original.

the catch: i have keys but i'm not allowed in until tomorrow, and i work every day until next thursday, so moving in properly has to wait for the 21st.

the last few birthdays weren't good. one of them i was in a boot and couldn't walk. this one was actually so good. feeling super grateful to be here.
